  • Record: The largest gingerbread house was constructed in Texas, USA, in 2013. It was 18.28 m long, 12.8 m wide and 3.07 m tall. Visitors were able to meet Santa Claus, in exchange for a donation to St Joseph's Hospital in order to raise monies to build a new trauma center.

  • Christmas in Japan isn't a public holiday, but a nationwide tradition is to eat KFC on Christmas Eve, thanks to a successful marketing campaign in the 1970s.

    Every year an estimated 3.6 million Japanese families treat themselves to fried chicken from the American fast-food chain.

  • Some people think using "Xmas" instead of "Christmas" is disrespectful, but the "X" comes from the Greek letter Chi, the first letter of the Greek word for Christ, Χριστός (Christos).

  • How to make the perfect hot chocolate:

    Heat milk in a saucepan, melt in dark chocolate or cocoa powder, and sweeten to taste with sugar or honey, stirring until smooth. For extra flavor, add a splash of vanilla or cinnamon, then whisk for froth and top with whipped cream or marshmallows​
